The 260+ art cars will be competing for awards in the following 14 categories:

Mayor’s Cup $1500

Parade Participants’ Choice $1500

People's Choice $1500

Best Art Cars (4) - decorated, embellished or augmented four or more wheeled vehicles. Judges select 4 winners in the Best Art Car category. $700 each

Best Contraption—carts, chariots, constructions, couches, lawnmowers, wagons, wheelchairs, wheeled sculptures, oversized inchworms, etc. $250

Best Cycle—decorated uni-, bi-, tri-cycle, motorized or not, includes scooters. $250

Daily Driver—art car used as a daily means of transportation. $250

Best Lowrider—painted, hydraulic, chopped. $250

Best Music—ensemble on decorated vehicle or marching band. $250

Best Painted—painted or airbrushed. $250

Best Performance—show on wheels! $250

Best Political Statement—political overtones, overt or otherwise. $250

Greg Blankenship Skater Award — best decorated group or individual on skates. $250

 

Judges for the 21st Annual Houston Art Car Parade

2008 Houston Art Car Parade Judges

Ann Harithas, with her husband James, founded the Art Car Museum in 1988 and is a longtime supporter of the Art Car movement.

Dick Messer is Director of the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, California. He has spent over fifty years building, restoring, racing and collecting cars.

Marilyn Oshman founded the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art and has been a devoted advocate for the Art Car Parade from its beginning.

Joe M. Powell is an architect and Executive Director of the Rice University Building Institute. He has never missed a Houston Art Car Parade.

Dawn Ullrich is Director of the George R. Brown Convention Center and a tireless promoter of downtown Houston's vibrant cultural life.
