Houston's Art Car Parade America's First and Still the Largest

A series of unrelated events in 1984 gave birth to an art movement in Houston, Texas. That year, Kit and Karl Detering donated a 1967 Ford station wagon to The Orange Show, the art environment created by Houston postman Jeff McKissack to honor his favorite fruit, the orange. A local artist, Jackie Harris, then used plastic fruit and paint to transform the car into the Fruitmobile. The intention was to auction this car off to benefit the McKissack environment. The six people who purchased the car at the auction then donated it back to The Orange Show.
