The Beer Can House, located at 222 Malone is open through August- Wednesday-Friday, 9am-1pm and Saturday-Sunday 12-5pm. Get out and show some love. September 1st-June 1st we are open Saturday and Sunday from 12-5pm. The Orange Show is currently closed for annual summer renovations.

Fall season opener is on the calendar!!!

Join the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art as we kick off the 2010 fall concert series on September 9th with Pillars and Tongues from Chicago. With just three members, Pillars and Tongues manage to craft powerful folk, gospel, and blues together along with trance-inducing vocal dynamics. They are currently touring the US to support their most recent LP, “Lay of Pilgrim Park"..."it’s hard to believe Lay of Pilgrim Park is the work of just three people in the same room,” says Jason Crock, Pitchfork. Art Cars on the loose!

If you were out and about on Saturday, August 7 for White Linen Night in the Heights- we hope you had the opportunity to see the amazing Mini Cooper art cars on display in front of The Heights Theater. (photo credit: Alex Harrah)

A joint project between BMW-MINI/AUDI-VOLKSWAGEN, several extremely talented local art car artists and the Orange Show; these painted masterpieces were crafted with a quick-drying temporary color in about 3 days. The Mini Coopers could be seen around The Heights on Saturday for people to pose with, touch and consider purchasing. We're extremely proud of the art car artist community in Houston and can't thank them enough for all they do - what a wonderful display of creativity.

If you haven't had the opportunity to make it to the Art Car Museum lately NOW is the perfect time. Currently on display is an amazing body of work by Houston artist Barbara Jones.

"The Art Car Museum is proud to present our new exhibition “Barbara Jones: Her Life in Paint”. Barbara Jones was a highly regarded Houston painter who passed away last year. She practiced her distinctive painting technique while studying art at the University of Houston under professors Richard Stout and John Alexander. Years ago, Barbara described her passion for painting quite truthfully,“The paint drives me, I do not drive the paint”. Her vibrant use of color, accurate employment of perspective and her inspired talent in communicating the genuine essence of those in her portraits are just a few of the significant aspects of her paintings. Her passionate disapproval of war, killing and senseless violence is evident in her “God” and “Girls with Guns” series. Through her self portraits, landscapes, portraits of friends and family; Barbara Jones offers the world a glimpse into her life, in paint."

Writer and brand-spankin' new Houstonian, Christina Uticone shares her experience seeing the exhibition here. Take her advice and don't miss this look at a beloved artists' works. You won't regret it! The exhibit will be on view through October 8, 2010.

Exciting News about the 2011 Art Car Parade

Dear Art Car Artists:

The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art is thrilled to share some very exciting news with you. We have the unique opportunity to showcase the 2011 Houston Art Car Parade not only to our local supporters, but to a new group of art enthusiasts from more than 50 countries.

After much discussion, the board has voted in favor of moving the 2011 Houston Art Car Parade to Sunday, May 22, 2011. This one-time move gives all Art Car Artists the distinguished opportunity to be the opening event of the American Association of Museums (AAM) Annual Meeting and Museum Expo, which is being hosted in Houston for the first time.

The AAM Annual Meeting and Museum Expo will bring 5,000-6,000 of our regional, national, and international museum curators, practitioners and visionaries from more than 50 countries. The AAMs main mission is to make a "unique contribution to the public by collecting, preserving, and interpreting the things of this world," a mission we feel perfectly parallels our desire to “celebrate the artist in everyone.” Having the Art Car Parade kick off this expo of global art enthusiasts will give each of you the chance to reveal your art to an even larger audience of the world at one great event. Your Art Cars are guaranteed to be one of the most exceptional public art form displays the AAM has ever encountered.

After the 2011 Parade rolls through Houston and the AAM Annual Meeting and Museum Expo concludes, we will continue our tradition of having the Parade on the second Saturday of May.

The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art’s board of directors and staff thank those of you who have shared your input and ideas to help make the Art Car Parade bigger and better than ever. We wanted to let you all know of the decision first before this news is officially released to the media and the general public.

We're still looking to add to our army of *able bodied volunteers for the Art Car Parade Weekend. If you are interested in volunteering for The Orange Show and helping with all things parade related please fill out the Volunteer Registration page located here and PLEASE to come to one of our TWO upcoming volunteer orientation sessions: Thursday, April 29 6-8pm or Saturday, May 1st 11-1pm. *We need SKATERS! SKATERS! SKATERS!

Come to volunteer orientation sessions to pick up your t-shirt(s) and we will answer all your questions about event assignments.

If you are unable to attend one of our volunteer orientation sessions you may come to The Orange Show office M-W 9:30am-5:30 to get your informational packet and t-shirt or contact your volunteer coordinator to make arrangements.

All art car artists are especially invited to join in VBB’s Art Car Sprawl in the First Ward and preview their cars a week before the Orange Show’s Art Car Parade! There will be food, drinks, kids-play area, community, conversation, and open mic! The show, Art Car Sprawl in the First Ward, is a celebration of culture, global connections, history, labor, and the power of movement and will include a preview of VBB’s first art car, Digital Meets Pakistani Truck Art, designed by Eric Hester and Sehba Sarwar. Decorations on the car include video screens showing VBB’s history, truck art designs from Karachi collected by Sehba Sarwar on a recent trip to Pakistan, and an open mic podium welded out of the passenger seat. Writers are invited to bring their work to the living room art show as well as at the Orange Show’s Art Car Parade on May 8 to perform in the car. The show will include work by 8 more artists in Houston and in Pakistan. All are invited!

Houston Art Car Weekend May 6-9, 2010

Orange Show Art Car Weekend is four days of fabulous and fun events!

Art Car Ball - Thursday, May 6, 2010

7-11pm

"The Legend Returns" to The Orange Show. This outrageous party brings together a diverse crowd of artists, art patrons and spectators celebrating the drive to create in us all. The Art Car Ball blurs the line between spectator and performer, as the audience is as likely to come in inspired car-part costumes as the artists. The location for the Ball will be the 2400 block of Munger St. and is sure to be a party to remember featuring live music, fantastic food/drink and cars, cars, cars! Advance tickets can be purchased for $25. Tickets will be $30 at the door.

Main Street Drag - Friday, May 7, 2010

Held on Friday morning, Main Street Drag is the official start of Art Car Weekend. Caravans of Art Cars visit more than 20,000 people who otherwise may not be able to experience the Saturday Parade. “The Drag” stops at children’s hospitals, schools, community centers and senior living facilities to spread smiles and the creative spirit with more than 80 Art Cars participating.

There is no charge for this event but you must register in advance. To request a school visit please contact the Orange Show.

Sneak Peek / Shop Talk - Friday, May 7, 2010

Friday evening (6p-9p) is the public’s first chance to see what’s new in the world of Art Cars and some old favorites from year’s past. Sponsored by Opportunity Houston, Sneak Peek features live music and entertainment throughout Discovery Green. As the sun goes down, the park becomes filled with illuminated Art Cars outfitted with special night lighting and blazing fire.

This event is free and open to the public.

The Houston Art Car Parade

It's TRUE! It's TRUE! Comedian Dan Aykroyd is set to stir up good times at the 23rd Annual Art Car Parade. Acting as official Grand Marshal of the parade, Dan Aykroyd will start the parade in style - and hang out in the VIPit area for meet and greet opportunities.

Cars line up at 9am at Taft and Allen Parkway, parade rolls at 1pm

On Saturday May 8th, watch as more than 250 rolling works of art turn concrete into a colorful canvas to celebrate the artist in everyone! Mobile masterpieces motor down Allen Parkway in the world’s oldest and largest Art Car Parade. The Parade begins at Allen Parkway and Taft Street and ends at Montrose Boulevard after looping around the Heritage Society. Plenty of viewing space is available along Allen Parkway between Montrose and Bagby.

This event is free and open to the public.

*$25 reserved seating (shaded bleachers) is now available in Sam Houston Park. If you are interested in reserved seating - you may purchase tickets here.

VIPit Party - 11am-3pm

The official party of the Houston Art Car Parade, VIPit offers the absolute best views and features a deluxe picnic lunch from some of Houston’s best restaurants. Shaded bleacher seating, fun family activities, gift bags and live entertainment make VIPit THE place to be on parade day.

Individual tickets are $125
Tickets for children under 12 are $15.

Art Car Artists Awards Ceremony & Brunch - Sunday, May 9 11am-2pm

The last blast of the weekend takes place on Sunday afternoon, this year at the Continental Club. The Art Car Awards Ceremony and Brunch feature live music and entertainment, food and drink, and artists selling their creations. This year’s winners will be announced at the awards ceremony with more than $10,000 in cash and prizes going to the best Art Car creations in 14 categories.

This event is free and open to the public

& Trophy Workshop

Welcome to the Monument

After months of restoration the Orange Show Monument will be celebrating it’s re-opening. This will be a free outdoor event with special guests to bless our upcoming season and St. Arnolds to refresh your spirit. Please bring non-perishable food items for donation to Houston Food Bank, our way of giving back and offering a blessing to our local community.

Danza Azteca Teokalli de Houston is a traditional Aztec group who has presented in various venues all over Texas. They will dance from 1:30- 2:00pm. This dance will be preceded by a blessing ceremony, where various herbs and smudging sticks will be used to promote positive energy and good luck for the year to come.

Trophy Workshop

Join us as we help kids make trophies that will be given to the winners of the 2010 Houston Art Car Parade. This is a great way to get into the 2010 Art Car season, support the arts in Houston and have fun at the same time.

We Need Volunteers

We are pleased to announce that it's time to get yer motors running - the 2010 Houston Art Car Parade Application is live and ready for you to tell us the story of your fabulous entry, even if it has not yet been hatched.

The entry fee for individuals and non-corporate vehicles is still just $30. For branded vehicles please contact the parade staff as there are special considerations.

Deadline to enter is March 19,2010, Online entry is preferable, but you may request a hard copy in the mail by emailing artcarentry@orangeshow.org
