The intrepid Orange Show Eyeopeners group made a New Year's pilgrimage to Xilitla, Mexico, to visit the
extraordinary environment of Edward James, the English artist and eccentric. Over several acres and two decades, James
worked with Plutarco Gastelum and other local artists to create Las Pozas, a surreal sculpture garden of
36 concrete sculptures in a lush jungle. Great gates lead to paths bordered by mosaic serpents, huge concrete leaves and flowers
to spiraling stairs to structures like the House with Three Stories that Might Be Five, House with a Roof
Like a Whale, and the Temple of the Ducks. Our group stayed at the guest house designed by James,
El Castillo, where they met Avery Danziger, and viewed his documentary film on Edward James. Our group also
visited the nearby town of Tancanhuitz, where they bought prison art right through the bars and toured a church built
on the site of an ancient Huastec pyramid. On our last day, six of our group toured the missions of
Huehuetian, Aquismon, and Tambaque, while the other half visited the ruins of El Tajin.
